Updates For the Nosy…Er Uh I Mean Concerned

August 20, 2008

Back to School 8/18/08

Thank God for online classes! I only have to attend the campus twice a week (M and W) for this keyboarding class that I now know will be harder than I thought. Not because the course is hard or the teacher is strict but because there’s a “young lady” in the class who has the attention span of a monkey (was that mean?) and absolutely no short term memory. In the middle of a timed typing test she turns to another student to ask her a question so the teacher tells her not to do so because she could be distracting her. Do you know that 5 minutes later she was doing it again?

Later, she decides that she wasn’t making enough noise by talking and flipping the pages in her folder so she started popping her gum. It wasn’t that little every couple of minutes pop either.

Yanno that
……pop……………….pop….pop……………………..pop….

NO! It was this constant

poppoppoppoppop

drove me crazy!

I almost turned around and strangled her. Only reason I didn’t: too many witnesses.

Other than her the class is going to be a breeze. I can’t wait to get started!

On another [related] note, I’ve finally got a sense of direction with regards to my education. I’ve decided that for the time being I’m going to work towards getting an Administrative Assistant Certificate so that I can better my chances of obtaining a job as a Secretary or Clerk. Once I do obtain both (a job and my certificate–not necessarily in that order) I’m going to save up enough money to get a place in (that is on the campus dorm) or near CSUN (Cal State Northridge) so that I can enroll there in their Deaf Studies program.

I’m realistic in that I know that this goal is going to be a lot of hard, long work; but it’s very plausible so i’m happy and anxious. I tried to take all my classes at one time. Lol. Well just about all of them. I had like 18 units at one point but I found out I didn’t need one of the classes so I dropped it.

Speaking of Job Hunting

I’ve been filling out applications left and right (and up and down). I applied to positions in Chino, Ontario, Redlands, Riverside, San Bernardino, Fontana, damn near the entire I.E. (that’s Inland Empire for the non-locals). The job force is no joke. Normally when you fill out an application and submit it for review you know in the back of your mind that there are other people applying for the exact same position as you but you have no real idea of just how many other people you have to beat out for the job. Well recently I had the opportunity misfortune of experiencing just how many people I was up against.

I applied for a position at the DMV and the process is so very different from the “norm” that I almost didn’t want to apply. Actually it’s easy but because you have to take a test you have to keep tuning into the website to see if the testing location will be/is in your area or somewhere nearby. When I first applied the only testing locations were in San Diego. Need I say more? A few weeks ago the testing site made it’s way to San Bernardino so of course I jumped on the opportunity. Well the day of the Women’s Dept. at my church was hosting a yard sale and of course I couldn’t attend but my mother was. I had to drop her off in Rialto and get to downtown San Bernardino before 8 a.m. Please explain to me why it was 7:20 a.m. and I hadn’t even left the house yet?

Needless to say I was speeding to get there in time. I ran through a stop sign in a residential area (unintentionally–I was half way thru the intersection before I realized the sign was even there), cussed out several old ladies and made a couple of illegal turns/lane changes to get there. Do you know that when I arrived not only was I not late (it was about 7:59 a.m. — yes I’m that good, lol) but even if I had been late it wouldn’t have mattered. Why, you ask? Well because the line was out of the door, around the corner and almost off the campus (we tested at Pacific High School). The long line was a bittersweet greeting: on one hand I’m not late and wont be locked out; on the other I have to test better than at least half those people to even be considered.

-gulp-

All these people, huh?

DMV testing - not even HALF of it on TwitPic DMV testing line 2 - STILL not even HALF on TwitPic

Both of those shots were take after we’d gotten off the front parking lot and onto the front entrance steps of the campus. I had to sneak and take the pictures so forgive me for the tiny blurriness. I didn’t want people to think I was weird by taking a pic. Lol but do you know that these ladies about 3 people ahead of me did just that: took out their phones and snapped a pic of the line.

Oh, lol, but speaing of the other people in line. I heard this girl behind me whining about not having a certificate ID (something assigned to each applicant and necessary to help ID who’s scantron score sheet is whos). It, for some strange reason, was the only thing that didn’t print out on her confirmation page. So she started worrying that she wouldn’t be allowed to take the test without and that fear coupled with the heat and frustration/anger from waiting in that long ass line at 8 in the morning made her say the dumbest thing I’ve heard in…ever! She turns to a lady who was with her and says (verbatim):

They better be happy I need this job or else I’d leave right now.

WHAT?! I had to think about dead puppies in order to keep from laughing. Seriously. Lol.

Anyway, pray for me and I’ll pray for you.
